What treatment options are available for pelvic prolapse?
There are operative & non-surgical treatment options depending on the form and progress of the prolapse. Non-surgical procedures include physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor to relieve the prolapse, improvements in diet and bowel habits, use of a pessary (a rubber tube inserted inside the vagina) to provide extra support.
Surgery is done to retract the prolapse, repair the torn ligaments and fascia. A synthetic mesh may be used to give additional support.
