Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum (the section of the colon) looses its internal strength and protrudes from the anus. Rectal prolapse can be internal, but may be seen or felt outside the body in advanced stages. If this happens it is considered a complete rectal prolapse.
Rectal prolapse may occur when pelvic and anal sphincter muscles weaken due to a lifelong habit of straining during bowel movement, hereditary influences, pressures from childbirth or as part of the aging process. This occurs more often in women than in men and its signs may also resemble those of hemorrhoids.
Rectal prolapse symptoms depend on severity but may include:
Pain and discomfort within the lower abdomen felt intense
Anusal blood and mucus
The sensation of constipation, or that after passing a motion the rectum is never fully empty
Rectum protrusion from anus
The need to use large amounts of toilet paper to cover up after a bowel movement
Leakage of liquefied feces, particularly after stomach movement
Faecal incontinence, or diminished bowel-control function.
Types of Rectal Prolapse
There are three major conditions under the prolapse of the term rectal:
Full-thickness rectal prolapse defines the entire rectum that emerges from the anus
Mucosal prolapse defines only the prolapsing rectal mucosa (not the entire wall)
Within intussusception in which the rectum collapses but does not leave the anus

Rectopexy and Sigmoid Resection (Goldberg-Frykman procedure)
Is performed in patients that are capable of tolerating a general anesthetic to shorten the redundant rectosigmoid colon and restore post-sacral fixation. Prolapse occurs with or without resection in fewer than 10 per cent of patients following rectopexy.
Perineal proctectomy (Altemeier procedure amended)
Is an option for patients who are frail or infirm. It is also an appealing treatment for the rare young man with external rectal prolapse who has a doubt about potency. The rate of recurrence is usually about 20%, although lower rates have been recorded in single-institution retrospective studies
